The 6th Annual Fishbourne Flat Five was another huge success with a record-breaking 193 runners and 40 walkers taking part. Yet again the sun shone and conditions were perfect on the cross—country route. James Baker, absent this year, holds onto his course record of 27min. 19 seconds set in 2009. This year’s winner was Julian Manning from Denmead Striders who ran an impressive race to finish almost two minutes ahead of his nearest rival in 29 minutes . 24 seconds. A new course record was set by the fastest female, Jennifer Harley, from Chichester runners with a time of 34 minutes. 22 seconds, taking a minute of Sarah Fenmore-Colin’s record set last year of 35 minutes. 37 seconds. This is however not just a run for elite athletes and many took part for the first time, some of whom running for the first time since leaving school. It was particularly pleasing to have a number of younger competitors cheered on by friends and family. As ever, the challenge of the kissing gates, harbour wall and boardwalks makes this a unique and increasingly popular event attracting both local people and those from farther afield. As well as the runners, several families and groups took part in a walk which followed the same route around the harbour. Many ended the event at the newly-refurbished Fishbourne Club whose opening ceremony took place in the afternoon.
This year’s Fishbourne Flat Five was raising money for the Fishbourne Pre-School and, although not all the money has been counted, nearly £2000 has been raised for essential maintenance and improvements to this highly-regarded and very popular village facility.
